The use of humor in western written instrumental music : psychoanalytic perspectives on musical "language"
Thesis resume
Our research examines the existence, statuses, and function of humor in tonal instrumental music. Drawing on works from this corpus, we discuss the Freudian conception of humor, arguing that the humorous process predominantly invokes the consoling facet of the Superego. Endorsing the thesis that humor can be defined as a possible form of sublimation, we examine this process in its articulation with different types of negation - Verdrängung, Verneinung, Verleugnung - in the face of the trial of castration, as well as in its proximity to the Real of death.
In a first stage, we identify a type of humor in tonal instrumental music that mobilizes the infantile facet of the Superego as a means of avoiding the threat of castration. By circumventing censorship, this type of humorous process authorizes a transgressive dimension that grants the subject a position of temporary invulnerability in the face of reality's demands. Our research then deepens through an analysis of Verneinung and then Verleugnung, where humor in tonal instrumental music acts as a regulator of greater or lesser proximity to the Real : while this humorous process limits the Imaginary in the face of castration in order to designate lack, it conversely solicits the Imaginary in the face of the impossibility of death, in order to construct a necessary veil. Humor in tonal instrumental music thus leads to limiting a form of fetishization of the ideal facet of sublimation. In doing so, we approach the truth of sublimation, which opens onto the dimension of the Real as the impossibility of death and the rock of castration. Our research thus leads us to analyze this tipping point when the emergence of the Real becomes a priority for the artist, for example, for Dimitri Chostakovich, when black, grating humor, which then becomes closer to irony, becomes essential for denouncing the imposture of social and political semblances. We then examine humor in tonal instrumental music as a sinthomal supplementation, insofar as it operates at the point of articulation of the three registers - Real, Symbolic, Imaginary - when the Symbolic and Real dimensions dominate. From this point on, the dynamic of veiling and unveiling of the dimension of the Real becomes an analyzer of a particular treatment of death and the bedrock of castration. This marks a style belonging to the composer, the performer, or the listener, or else a singular ethics of desire.
