Action in Psychoanalysis Theoretic, clinical and interdisciplinary considerations of the notion of agent and critique of its use in North American psychoanalysis and psychotherapies
Thesis resume
The notion of the agent, which is very underdeveloped in psychoanalysis, touches on a set of neighboring disciplines (philosophy, cognitive psychology, psychotherapy), and its use in the clinical field is largely ignored. The aim of this project is therefore to introduce an inter-disciplinary consideration of this notion and of its link to the problem of action, in order to examine how these two categories are used today. In their reference to these categories, psychoanalysis and North American psychotherapies offer a “way of operating” that can lead to confusion, and whose roots are to be found in the culturalist orientation predominant in the United States. This way of operating has returned to France, thereby influencing contemporary French psychoanalytic discourse. Consequently, this research project seeks to conceptualise the agent and acting in psychoanalysis, and to examine the possible theoretical and clinical consequences that may accompany a psychoanalytic practice that neglects the major role of these concepts.
